Susan participates in team conferences, family meetings, and Rehab staff meetings. She provides an "open door" policy, which allows staff access to her whenever needed. Rehabilitation nursing is a multi-faceted form of nursing. The rehab nurse participates as part of the rehab "team". The nurse functions as a liaison between the patient and the physician and with other team members. The nursing staff has several areas that are of primary focus. Nursing begins with the initial patient admission assessment and unit orientation. The admission assessment alerts the nurse to existing medical problems and potential problems that may occur due to the current health status of the patient. The focus of rehab nursing is on bowel and bladder function, skin integrity, education needs regarding a specific disease process and teaching for new or changed medications, and safety issues related to their current admission. Unit orientation provides the patient and family with information about the unit, patient rights and responsibilities, and hospital policies and an opportunity to ask questions regarding the rehab stay. Nursing provides 24 hour nursing care, administration of medications, IV therapy as needed, wound care, a bowel and bladder program if indicated and teaching and training. |
